A personal letter from editor-in-chief, Patrick Madrid
Dear Friend in Christ:
For over 12 years, I've traveled the country as a full-time apologist teaching Catholics how to explain and defend the Catholic Faith. I've learned three important things:
- Catholics are hungry to know what the Church teaches and why.
- Catholics are tired of not having good answers
to the tough questions they get from non-Catholics.
- Every Catholic I meet knows people who've left the Church (friends, family members, co-workers), and they want to know how to bring them back.
If you're like most Catholics, you're concerned about these issues too. No doubt, you know somebody who's left the Church.
That's why I'm writing you this letter. I want to introduce you to Envoy .magazine, an exciting bi-monthly journal of Catholic apologetics and evangelization that will strengthen your faith and help you help former Catholics (and non Catholics) come home to the Church.
Sure, there are plenty of good Catholic magazines out there, but believe me, you've never seen anything like Envoy!
Envoy. brings you the "next generation" in Catholic apologetics and evangelization: stunning, full-color layouts, articles by today's top Catholic writers, and exciting interactive departments.
Let me give you some specifics. Take a look at these regular departments that will energize your Faith and teach you how to share it effectively . . .Besides these exciting regular departments (not to mention letters from our readers, a calendar of events, "Going the Distance," my editorial section, and other regular departments), each issue of Envoy. brings you dynamic and useful feature articles by today's top Catholic writers, apologists, and evangelists.
- Nuts & Bolts is practical apologetics at its best. Tim Staples, a convert from Fundamentalism who's now a dynamic Catholic apologist, shows you step-by-step methods of answering specific anti-Catholic claims. Tim knows the Bible inside and out, and he teaches you how to use it.
- What Would You Do? is one of our "interactive" departments where you get to share your ideas. We pose a "real life" dilemma that you're invited to solve. Send us your solution and mull over those offered by other readers. Ten thousand heads are better than one, right? We can all learn from the solutions suggested here. (Sneak Preview: The first scenario is "Should She, or Shouldn't She?" Sound provocative? Good. Subscribe and decide how you'd handle the situation.)
- Our Op-Ed section features the opinions of prominent Catholics invited to comment on topics of importance - topics you're interested in. In our Premiere Issue you'll hear from Bishop Edward Slattery of Tulsa and Bill Beckman, director of the office of Catechetics for the Archdiocese of Denver. Their subject: "How can we wake the sleeping giant?"
- Faith of Our Fathers introduces you to the early Church. We examine key doctrines and that the early Church was Catholic. Other magazines may have quotes from the Fathers, but they don't bring you the never-before-seen-in-English quotes that Envoy. will.
- I Have a Question is edited by Fr. Brian Wilson. Besides being a fine scholar, he's spent countless hours in the confessional. He's qualified to answer your questions about faith and morals.
- Speaking of morals, you'll love Gray Matters, where top moral theologian Dr. Mark Lowery tackles the vexing moral issues of our day. You'll love his clear, common-sense explanations and advice.
- Random Access is another "interactive" department. Readers share their experiences of random evangelization encounters. Were they successful in sharing the Faith, or did they do the Mother of all belly flops? Subscribe and you'll find out.
- Friends in the Field is a blast of optimism. We profile three apostolates on the front lines of apologetics and evangelization - apostolates you'll want to know about.
- Diplomatic Corps - Envoy. equips you to become an ambassador for Christ. The men and women profiled in this department are His world-class diplomats. You'll enjoy inspiring glimpses of today's Catholic leaders.
- Personal Picks is my book review section. In each issue I give compact appraisals of three important books I hope you'll add to your personal collection. I like `em, and I think you will too.
- InQUIZition, our quirky and challenging quiz, is where you can rack your brain on Catholic trivia. It's fun, but not easy.
- At Ease, the last page of each issue, is our attempt at humor. We hope you'll have as much fun reading it as we do in writing it.
- Can We Talk?, Catholic speaker and writer Mary Beth Bonnacci will offer her commentaries on sharing the Catholic faith.
- Sacred Scripture, Catholic convert Steve Ray will show you how to study scripture privately or in a group setting. This valuable resource will help you grow in understanding of and love for Sacred Scripture.
- Family Matters, Another convert Kristine Franklin has a friend she wants you to meet! In her column, Family Matters, Kris will introduce you to Catholics throughout the world and their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Envoy. is fun and "reader-friendly." You don't need a Ph.D. in theology to enjoy it. You'll get articles and departments that are interesting, charitable, and relevant to your life. I'd love to tell you about the Premiere Issue's exciting feature articles, but I don't want to spoil the surprise! So here's what to do . . .
