Can Outsiders Be Insiders? (entire story)
In 1215, the fourth Lateran Council declared, "There is one universal Church of the faithful, outside of which no one at all is saved." Seven hundred years later, Jesuit Father Leonard Feeney made the same claim and was excommunicated. Extra ecclesiam nulla salus: No salvation outside of the Church's doctrine found in every age of Catholic history, held to by the Church's best and most influential minds. Councils declared it, Fathers and Doctors taught it, but somewhere along the line, it became heresy. Or did it? With characteristic erudition, Fr. Peter Stravinskas walks us through the tumultuous history of this dogma, illustrating the difference between doctrinal reversal and doctrinal development. By Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, S.T.D., Ph.D.
